A day in the life of our greenhouse growers

A day in the life of our greenhouse growers

Ever wonder what it takes to grow the tomatoes you toss into your salad or snack on straight from the pack? It’s not just planting and picking, greenhouse growing is a carefully managed through science and technology every single day of the year

Let’s take you behind the scenes.

The day starts early with a full crop walk. Growers assess plant and root health by looking at leaf colour, growth patterns, and overall vitality—basically “reading” how the plant is feeling. They’re checking for balance: not too stressed, not too soft, just right.

At the same time, they’re managing crop feed—fine-tuning water and nutrients (fertilizer) to make sure each plant is getting exactly what it needs to thrive.

Then the team moves into plant care, where the detailed work happens.
Growers prune and de-leaf plants to keep them strong and focused on producing high-quality fruit. Removing excess leaves improves airflow, light exposure, and energy direction—think of it as helping the plant “focus” on growing better tomatoes, not just more leaves.

It is also important to adjust for mother nature.  Greenhouses are all about balance. Growers constantly adjust light, temperature, humidity, and venting throughout the day to match changing conditions.  Daylight hours and natural light play a huge role in how tomatoes develop—impacting everything from growth speed to flavour. When the sun shifts, so does the strategy.

Once the crop is ready and the tomatoes reach peak ripeness, they’re carefully harvested by hand. Timing is critical because too early or too late can impact the flavor and texture.

From there, the tomatoes move to the packhouse, where they undergo quality inspections for color, firmness and sweetness levels.  When all of the quality standards are met, the team moves the fruit into packing and finally coding for traceability.

Greenhouse growing is where science meets care. Every decision from watering schedules to how many leaves stay on a plant will directly impacts the flavour, quality, and experience you get at home.

So next time you grab a pack of tomatoes, just know there’s a whole day (and team) behind every bite!
